It is known that the earth is heliocentric (orbits around the sun). If this is the case, why do some people doubt this fact and believe it revolves around them instead? We are all unique and important. However, we do not individually affect earth’s gravitational pull.
Finding balance between confidence and conceit can be challenging. How healthy is your self image? Do you flinch every time someone looks at you? Do you shove people out of the way so you can get a better view in a mirror?
me me me me me
OK. I do go by Mimi but that is not even the same as being so completely self absorbed that no one else matters. So don’t go there! This is also not an opera singer warming up her voice. This is the me show.
The me show consists of two things: me and everyone who affects me. Got it? Anything said or done is a direct affront to me. The significance of the action is irrelevant. If I hear, see, touch, or taste it, I get dibs. It is now part of my show.
what’s wrong with looking out for me?
Absolutely nothing. The reality is not everyone has your back. In fact I am sure there are those who would happily throw you under the bus given a chance. A little paranoia can come in handy.
The issue is others feeling forced to walk on eggshells in order to dodge a new episode from the me show. I don’t know about you, but the thought of pieces of eggshell getting stuck in the tender part of my foot makes me cringe. OUCH!
leadership and the me show
How effective is a leader who is overly concerned with her performance of the me show? She may be a genius with the biz but when her business savvy doesn’t translate to her team, there is no real leadership.
People model behaviors after their leaders. Good or bad, we are trendsetting for our staff. Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Habits are picked up from somewhere and we don’t take after strangers.
Hmm… I wonder if I can throw any other dumb little colloquialisms I can think of in this post? Random stream I followed but it is MY SHOW!
One must not be completely selfless in order to be an effective leader. A determining factor for a strong leader is someone who has drive. She should be self-aware as well as conscious of and empathetic towards those who work for her. Seems like a tall order to fill? It should be and it is.
when to shut the me show down
If you aren’t sure if you are a regular player in the me show, here are a few questions you can ask yourself:
- Are people avoiding eye contact with you or shuffling away whenever you are present? If you aren’t even vaguely aware of your surroundings, put down the mirror and observe.
- Are you overly concerned whether or not people are treating you fairly? Got news. Not everything is fair in life. It might not have anything to do with you (or it might) and the best thing you can do is deal with it and stop complaining.
- Is the conversation on your phone via text, FaceBook, Twitter or any other social media outlet more important than the person standing in front of you? Anyone who knows me, understands the phone is literally attached to my hand at all times. Actually that was a question my son came up with and being a key player in the me show, I plead the fifth on this one.
- Is it your way or the highway? Being inflexible is a great indicator of being self-absorbed.
Shutting off the me show may not be completely possible or plausible. I have yet to meet a person who isn’t interested in progressing her own agenda. Turning down the volume or taking a periodic break from the me show is a more realistic goal.
